Initiated in 2005 by Mathew Morgan and James Spooner after their collaboration on the documentary film going by the same title, Afropunk  is a festival that explores art in all its forms. The founders goal was to celebrate the black community which was sort of excluded from the punk movement in the USA and even beyond. After debuting at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Afropunk chose to include Soul music to the movement. Therefore, the event attracted headliners such as Lauryn Hill, Lenny Kravitz.. wich raised its audience considerably. Besides New York, we can now attend the Afropunk Fest in Atlanta, Paris, London, Johannesburg and very recently (it took over) Dakar. The festival being a symbol of black excellence is also an occasion for the attendees to celebrate their personality « afro but punk ! » through fashion. So here are some looks i was able to shoot for my « What ?! » series.

L’objectif des fondateurs était de célébrer une communauté noire qui était quelque peu exclue du mouvement punk aux Etats-Unis et dans le monde. Ayant débuté au sein de la Brookyn Academy of Music (BAM), Afropunk a fait le choix d’inclure la soul à son mouvement. Dès lors, les artistes tels que Lauryn Hill ou encore Lenny Kravitz s’y sont produits en tête d’affiche, ce qui leur a attiré une audience considérable. Au delà de New York, on peut désormais assister à Afropunk Atlanta, Paris, Londres, Johannesburg et très récemment, (un take-over)Dakar. Ce festival qui est aujourd’hui un symbole de la « black excellence » est aussi l’occasion pour les participants de célébrer leur personnalité « afro mais punk ! » à travers la mode. Voici en ce sens quelques looks que j’ai pu shooter pour mes séries « What ?! ».
